India – Dangerous Streak Surges and Landslides Hit Northern States

Heavy rainfall over the past few days has resulted in flash floods and landslides in northern India, particularly affecting the states of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Jammu and Kashmir. The situation in each state is as follows:

Himachal Pradesh:

Since last few day , Himachal Pradesh has experienced heavy rainfall, leading to significant flooding. According to the National Emergency Response Centre (NERC), seven people have lost their lives due to flooding and landslides in the state. Various districts, including Kullu, Bilaspur, Chamba, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, Una, and Shimla, have been affected. Approximately 50 villages have experienced flooding, resulting in damage to over 500 homes and complete destruction of 65 houses. The NERC has evacuated 935 individuals, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed three teams comprising 90 personnel and six boats to assist in rescue operations. The Beas and Parbati rivers in Kullu district have witnessed significant overflow, exacerbating the situation. Additionally, mountainous regions have faced heavy snowfall, leading to the need for rescue operations, with one reported death due to hypothermia.

Punjab:

Punjab
In Punjab, six individuals have lost their lives in rain-related incidents, with fatalities reported in Kapurthala (3), Amritsar (2), and Jalandhar. Over 20 houses have been damaged in the state, and the NERC has deployed three NDRF teams, consisting of 67 rescuers and six boats. Notably, Kapurthala recorded 229.5mm of rainfall, and Tarn Taran Sahib received 206mm within a 24-hour period.

Haryana and Delhi:

In Haryana, heavy rainfall caused the collapse of a house in Ambala, resulting in one fatality. Yamunanagar received 72.5mm of rain, while Karnal recorded 99.9mm within 24 hours. Furthermore, the water level of the Yamuna river at Delhi Railway Bridge in North Delhi reached 205.74 meters, surpassing the danger level of 204.83 meters, as reported by India's central Water Commission (CWC).

Jammu and Kashmir:

The state of Jammu and Kashmir has also experienced flooding and landslides due to heavy rainfall. Two individuals lost their lives in separate incidents in Kathua district, while landslides have obstructed the Srinagar to Kargil road. Additionally, heavy rains caused a building to collapse in Doda district, resulting in the deaths of five people. Numerous individuals had to be rescued after rivers overflowed, with 11 people saved from flooding in Billawar and six members of a family rescued in Kathua from the flooded Ujh river. Kathua recorded 104.4mm of rain within a 24-hour period on 24th September, according to the IMD (India Meteorological Department).

The situation across these regions remains challenging, with rescue and relief operations underway to assist those affected by the heavy rains, flash floods, landslides, and building collapses.
