38 Killed, 400 Injured As 2 Trains Derail In Odisha
In an unfortunate incident in Odisha's Balasore, an accident involving two trains has resulted in a tragic loss of life and numerous injuries. Reports indicate that thirty-eight individuals have lost their lives, while approximately 400 people have been injured. Rescue operations are underway, but there are concerns that the casualty count may increase. According to Odisha Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena, a third freight train was also involved in the accident.
The incident occurred when several coaches of the Coromandel Express, en route from Howrah to Chennai, derailed and fell onto the adjacent tracks. Tragically, the Yashwantpur-Howrah Superfast train, approaching from the opposite direction, collided with the derailed coaches, leading to further devastation, as confirmed by Railway Ministry spokesperson Amitabh Sharma.
The trains involved in the accident are identified as the 12841 Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express and the 12864 Yashwantpur-Howrah Superfast Express. Fifteen coaches of the Coromandel Express derailed, while two coaches of the other train were also affected.
Efforts to rescue those trapped in the wreckage are being supervised by Sudhanshu Sarangi, the Chief of Odisha Fire Services. Medical colleges and hospitals in the vicinity of Balasore have been put on high alert, and 60 ambulances have been mobilized to provide immediate medical assistance. The situation remains critical, and rescue and relief operations are ongoing.

The Prime Minister spoke to Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and is taking stock of the situation and said all possible assistance is being given to the affected.
Rescue efforts are being coordinated by Odisha Fire Services
chief Sudhanshu Sarangi, who is overseeing the operations. In preparation for
the injured, medical colleges and hospitals in and around Balasore have been
put on alert, and a fleet of 60 ambulances has been deployed to the scene. The
situation remains critical, and authorities are working tirelessly to provide
assistance and support to those affected by this tragic incident.
